Almost Christmas

‘Tis the season for cheesy family Christmas movies! David E. Talbert’s Almost Christmas premiered in theaters on November 11, 2016 and touts an incredibly talented cast full of recognizable faces.

Walter Meyers (Danny Glover) is still reeling from his beloved wife’s recent passing. As the holidays creep closer, he decides that he wants all of his children home under one roof for Christmas. What he does not anticipate is all of the dysfunction that they will bring.

Top L-R: John Michael Higgins , Nicole Ari Parker, Romany Malco, Danny Glover, Jessie T. Usher, D.C. Young Fly Middle L-R: Omar Epps, Gabrielle Union, Mo’Nique, JB Smoove, Kimberly Elise Bottom L-R: Nadej Bailey, Alkoya Brunson, and Marley Taylor

As far as holiday movies go this one is fairly standard and unoriginal. It does feature some big laughs, delivered mostly by the rambunctious Aunt May who is portrayed by Mo’Nique (Precious). There are also some funny hi-jinks provided by JB Smoove (Date Night), who portrays Kimberly Elise (John Q.)’s philandering husband.

Romany Malco, Kimberly Elise, Gabrielle Union and Jessie T. Usher star as Glover’s adult children and each is facing some type of challenge in their personal life. Malco’s Christian is running for public office and sacrificing time with his wife Nicole Ari Parker (Remember the Titans) and kids in the process.

Union’s character Rachel is a recent divorcee and single mom with an extremely tense relationship with her sister Cheryl, played by Elise. Rounding out the bunch is Usher’s character Evan, whose promising college football career is in danger due to his own risky behavior.

I was really rooting for Jessie T. Usher in this movie. After the abysmal Independence Day: Resurgence, I was hoping to get to see the young actor do more on screen. While he is solid in the role there is nothing memorable about it. The same can be said for the entire cast as no one delivers a standout performance.  A largely uninspiring script is mostly to blame, which the actors make up for by all of the fun that it clearly looks like they are having.

Almost Christmas doesn’t promise to be the best holiday experience of the season; in fact this movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and moviegoers don’t really have to either.  If you’re interested in passing the time or getting a good laugh you won’t be disappointed!
